Tax Officer – Colchester, VT, Brattleboro, VT or Keene, NH

Trust Company of Vermont is seeking a Trust Tax Officer to assist with tax planning and preparation of both 1099s and 1041s. The right candidate is a self-starter and has worked with high-net-worth clients providing a wide range of estate, financial and investment planning. The candidate should have and understanding of fiduciary taxes and complex estate planning. A qualified candidate must be highly organized, forward-thinking, and able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal guidance.

Job Location: Colchester, VT, Brattleboro, VT or Keene, NH

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Review account set up and transactions on trust accounting platform to ensure data is downloaded properly and help to maintain both applications.
  • Interpret and apply trust instruments and estate documents to determine proper tax treatment and reporting.
  • Conduct research on tax issues related to trust and estate taxation, including income allocation, DNI calculations, and portability elections, staying up to date on tax technical developments.
  • Collaborate closely with employee-owners to support clients’ long-term financial strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with current IRS regulations, tax law updates, and industry best practices.
  • Assist with any IRS and state tax audits or notices related to fiduciary returns.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in tax laws to ensure compliance and proactively identify planning opportunities.
  • Address technical issues and provide guidance on complex trust and estate structures.
  • Mentor and develop the team to foster a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
  • Participate in internal training programs to share expertise and enhance team capabilities.
Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Highly organized with great interpersonal skills and the ability to meet time constraints in a high demand environment.
  • An understanding of matters related to income, gift, and estate taxes, investments, employee benefits, insurance, and personal and philanthropic wealth transfer strategies.
  • Analytical expertise, high degree of accuracy with attention to detail required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and high reputation in local community.
  • Team player, willing to jump in wherever our growing company needs help.
  • Strong computer skills, including financial software, CRM, Excel, PowerPoint and OneSource TrustTax.
